What's a functional movement screen, and why do I need one?

When you join The Engine House Gym we need to understand how well you move so we can tailor your training. This ensures you can train safely with reduced risk of injury. A  functional movement screen (FMS) helps us to identify any asymmetries that may be causing movement problems, and spot any opportunities to improve your movement so you can train to the best of your ability.

What's a gym induction, sounds terrible.

During your induction, we will show you the basic movements that we use in the gym. This will include the following:

  • Squat
  • Hinge
  • Push
  • Pull
  • Loaded carries
  • Groundwork

We will also go through a health screen to establish any medical contraindications that may impact your training so that we can ensure that your training plan that we suggest is suitable for you.

Why don't you teach High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)?

We believe that random acts of variety when training do not help to increase performance and skill. What could possibly be more fun that variety you might ask? PROGRESS!

Can you guarantee I'll lose body fat?

Nope, because we don’t control you, and YOU are the key to unlock your potential. What we can say is that if you train with us and follow our advice, you’ll have the skills and knowledge to understand better how your body works and how you can optimise it and your lifestyle to reach your goals – whether it be fat loss, increased strength or to keep going for longer. As clichéd as it sounds, change truly comes from within and change needs knowledge.

How do I book a class, the open gym or a personal training session?

When you join our gym we will set you up with access to our online booking system (GoTeamUp). Personal training, massages and merchandise can be purchased via our online store through the GoTeamUp app.

What equipment is there to train with?

We love metal. Heavy metal! Our gym is fully loaded with the kit we know gets results. You’re not going to find rows of treadmills, eliptical trainers or rowing machines (though we admit to have a couple hanging around). What you will find however is a vast variety of kettlebells, barbells, high bars, weightlifting racks, prowlers, punch bags and battle ropes. Sound scary? Nope it’s not because we’ll show you how to use all of it the right way.

What about the C word - are you operating within COVID-19 government guidelines?

The safety of our members is our priority. We have increased and upgraded our existing cleaning schedules and we now use Viricidal disinfectant cleaner on our gym equipment, which is specifically designed to combat viruses.

All of the cleaning products used in the gym meet and exceed the current standards, and we have added antibacterial hand sanitiser stations throughout the facility for your convienience.

We’ve also increased staff training and added extra time between gym sessions to ensure the gym is safe for the next class.

We’ve also been inspected by the Vale of White Horse Council and received a positive safety review for our risk assessments and the cleaning processes we have in place.

In accordance with current government guidelines, masks are not required in the gym, although we do encourage members to wear masks as they enter the facility and maintain social distancing where possible.

Our staff are on hand to ensure space is maintained and we can discuss specific concerns such as private sessions or quieter classes with customers who would feel more comfortable with this.

Group Personal Training - what is it exactly?

Our highly trained coaches deliver group sessions throughout the day for up to 8 people at a time. During these sessions our trainers are able to adapt the exercises and intensity based on the needs of the individuals in the class, whilst also providing guidance on technique and progression.

The small class sizes also mean that there is ample opportunity to interact with your fellow training crew, grow and develop new friendships and build a support network of like-minded folk.
